After Effects is to motion graphics what Photoshop is to image editing. It is not primarily a 3D character animation tool; rather, it is a layer-based compositing application. It is the industry standard for creating kinetic typography, animated logos, television lower-thirds, and complex 2D vector animations. The workflow revolves around keyframes and expressions. An animator might import a static vector logo from Adobe Illustrator, separate its parts onto different layers, and set keyframes to make the logo bounce onto the screen. For more complex, repetitive movements—like a spinning gear—users can write Javascript-based "expressions" to automate the animation without setting hundreds of manual keyframes. It is also heavily utilized in post-production for live-action footage. Editors use its motion tracking capabilities to attach digital elements to moving objects in a video, or use its Rotobrush tool to cleanly extract a person from a background without a green screen.
