Atom (by GitHub) is a fiercely influential, deeply open-source web-technology-based code editor that mathematically pioneered the hackable editor concept. It engineered a terrifyingly customizable editor built on web technologies that allowed developers to modify literally every aspect of the UI. Though archived, it remains architecturally influential as the direct inspiration for VS Code and the Electron application framework used by most modern desktop IDEs.
