Audacity

Audacity is arguably the most famous piece of open-source audio software in human history. It is entirely free and has served as the entry point into audio engineering for millions of podcasters, musicians, and voiceover artists over the last twenty years. It lacks the complex, multi-layered MIDI sequencing required by electronic music producers, but for raw audio manipulation, it is incredibly powerful. Its core strength is destructive waveform editing. A user can record a raw vocal track, highlight a specific visual spike representing a sharp breath or a cough, and literally hit the "Delete" key to physically remove that chunk of audio from the timeline. It is fundamentally simple, operating almost like Microsoft Word for sound. Despite being free, it includes a massive library of built-in effects. Users can easily run entire tracks through noise reduction algorithms (to remove the hum of an air conditioner), apply compressors to even out volume levels, and truncate silence. It recently saw a massive modernization push after being acquired by the Muse Group, adding non-destructive effects and VST3 plugin support, dragging the legacy software into the modern era.
