AWS Key Management Service (KMS)

AWS Key Management Service (KMS) is a massively scaled, highly robust, managed cryptographic service that acts as the absolute foundational security bedrock for essentially every single workload operating within the Amazon Web Services cloud ecosystem. It is incredibly dominant because it is natively, deeply woven into the fabric of over 100 AWS services. If an enterprise wants to encrypt an S3 storage bucket, an EBS hard drive, or an RDS database, they do it natively using keys generated and protected by AWS KMS. The core value proposition of KMS is its massive integration and ease of use for AWS customers. Unlike deploying a complex, third-party key management cluster, a developer can click a single checkbox in the AWS console to encrypt an S3 bucket with a KMS Customer Managed Key (CMK). Behind the scenes, AWS KMS protects these keys using massive clusters of FIPS 140-2 validated Hardware Security Modules (HSMs). The customer retains total control over the key rotation policies and access permissions via standard AWS IAM policies. Crucially, KMS provides absolute, unalterable auditability via integration with AWS CloudTrail. Every single time a key is used to encrypt or decrypt data, that API call is permanently logged, allowing security teams to prove to regulators exactly who accessed encrypted data and when. While it is heavily locked into the AWS ecosystem (making it less ideal for true multi-cloud portability compared to HashiCorp Vault), for workloads natively residing in AWS, KMS is the default, undisputed standard for data protection.
