Benefitfocus (now part of Voya Financial) is a highly specialized, massive platform that does not do payroll or performance reviews; it focuses exclusively on the agonizing complexity of benefits administration. It is utilized almost entirely by massive, 10,000+ employee corporations, universities, and state governments. Its architecture is designed for extreme scale and complexity. A massive state government might offer its employees 50 different medical plans across 20 different carriers, combined with 15 different pension and union rules. Benefitfocus can absorb this crushing mathematical complexity and still present a clean, intuitive enrollment screen to a 65-year-old state employee sitting at home. It is highly famous for its data analytics engine. An HR director at a massive corporation can log into Benefitfocus and see a dashboard showing exactly how much the company is spending on emergency room visits versus preventative care across their entire workforce. The software can then use AI to actively suggest that the company introduce a "Telehealth" benefit next year to drastically reduce their multi-million dollar healthcare spend.
