Carlson Civil occupies a massive, incredibly fiercely loyal, and highly lucrative niche within the civil engineering world. It explicitly targets the independent engineer, the land surveyor, and the mid-sized firm who absolutely despises the terrifying complexity, massive bloat, and highly expensive subscription models of Autodesk and Bentley. Its signature feature is its "Platform Agnosticism." Autodesk forces you to use their proprietary AutoCAD engine. Carlson is legendary because it can run *on top of* your existing AutoCAD license, or it can be purchased running on top of IntelliCAD (which is completely free/included). This allows a small engineering firm to buy a highly powerful design software for a fraction of the cost. It heavily dominates the "Survey-to-Design" workflow. Carlson historically started as a pure land surveying company. Its software speaks the exact mathematical language of a surveyor perfectly. A surveyor shoots points in the field, Carlson imports the raw data, instantly draws the existing 3D terrain, and allows the engineer to design the new subdivision directly on top of it, creating an incredibly seamless, no-nonsense workflow.
