About Datto BCDR

Datto (now owned by IT conglomerate Kaseya) completely rules the Small and Medium Business (SMB) market by utilizing a very specific, highly successful hardware-plus-software business model. They do not sell software directly to a local dental office. They sell an actual, physical "Datto Appliance" (a metal server box) to a local Managed Service Provider (MSP), who bolts it into the dental office's IT closet. This appliance acts as a hyper-fast local backup cache. Every 15 minutes, it takes a snapshot of the dental office's main server. If the server catches fire at noon, the MSP simply logs into the Datto portal, clicks a button, and the physical Datto box in the closet instantly turns into a live, virtual clone of the dead server, getting the office back online in minutes. Crucially, the Datto box also silently replicates all that data to the Datto Cloud (an architecture known as Direct-to-Cloud or Hybrid Cloud). If a hurricane physically destroys the entire dental office building, including the Datto box, the MSP can instantly spin up a virtual clone of the dental server in the Datto Cloud, routing the office's internet traffic so they can continue working remotely.
