Logstash

Logstash (the 'L' in the massive ELK stack, built by Elastic) is a colossal, deeply historic, and intensely powerful open-source data processing pipeline. Like Fluentd, it does not store data; it is the massive industrial factory that processes it. It sits between the raw server generating the log and the Elasticsearch database that stores it. The absolute core differentiator of Logstash is its "Grok Filter and Heavy Data Transformation." A legacy Cisco firewall spits out an incredibly ugly, unreadable string of raw text. Logstash intercepts that text, uses its famous 'Grok' filter (which utilizes highly complex Regular Expressions), and rips that ugly text apart, perfectly extracting the IP Address, Timestamp, and Port Number into clean database columns. Because it offers this staggering, heavy-duty data transformation capability and integrates flawlessly with Elasticsearch, it remains the heavy-weight champion for complex enterprise log parsing.
