Autodesk Maya is the undisputed industry standard for high-end 3D animation, visual effects (VFX), and character creation. If you have watched a blockbuster superhero movie or played a AAA video game in the last two decades, you have almost certainly seen the output of Maya. While it is highly capable as a standalone modeling program, its true dominance lies in its incredibly sophisticated animation and rigging architecture, making it the central hub for massive production pipelines in Hollywood and major game studios. Maya's modeling toolset is expansive, supporting both complex polygonal modeling and NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) surfacing, which is essential for creating perfectly smooth, mathematically precise curves (often used in automotive design or highly stylized character faces). However, Maya truly separates itself with its rigging and character animation capabilities. Maya is also designed to be highly extensible.
