OpenToonz

OpenToonz has an incredibly prestigious pedigree. It is the open-source version of "Toonz," the commercial software famously customized and used by Studio Ghibli to animate legendary films like *Spirited Away* and *Princess Mononoke*. When the software was acquired by Dwango in 2016, they released this open-source version to the public, providing professional-grade traditional animation tools for free. Unlike Moho or Synfig, which focus heavily on vector rigging and puppetry, OpenToonz excels in the traditional, frame-by-frame, hand-drawn workflow. It includes sophisticated scanning tools specifically designed to take pencil drawings on paper, digitize them, extract the line art, and clean out the paper texture. It also includes the GTS scanning tool developed by Studio Ghibli, alongside a massive node-based visual effects compositor. Animators can apply complex lighting, blurring, and particle effects directly over their hand-drawn frames within the software. While the interface can feel archaic and overwhelming to modern digital natives, it offers a level of production-proven stability and tool depth that is unmatched in the free software ecosystem.
