Synfig Studio

Synfig Studio is an open-source, free-to-use 2D animation platform that focuses on vector tweening. It was designed to eliminate the need to draw every single frame of an animation manually. Instead of drawing a ball at the top of the screen, then drawing it slightly lower, and slightly lower again, you simply draw it once, set a keyframe, move it to the bottom, and set another keyframe. Synfig mathematically calculates and generates all the frames in between. Because it operates entirely on vector graphics, the animations generated in Synfig are resolution-independent. A project can be exported at 1080p, 4K, or 8K without any pixelation or loss of quality. The software uses a complex system of parameters and linking, allowing an animator to tie the color of an object to its position on the screen, creating dynamic automated effects. While it is immensely powerful, its user interface is notoriously technical and less intuitive than commercial alternatives. It requires a significant time investment to understand how its layer hierarchies and parameter links function. However, for artists operating on a zero-dollar budget who need robust vector tweening capabilities, Synfig remains one of the most capable open-source tools available.
