About Tyk
Tyk directly competes with Kong in the open-source API gateway space, but it differentiates itself through its architecture. While Kong is built on NGINX and Lua, Tyk is written entirely in Go (Golang). This architectural choice has made it highly popular among modern DevOps teams who prefer the concurrency handling and deployment simplicity of compiled Go binaries.
One of Tyk's biggest advantages is that its open-source offering includes an open-source dashboard. Many competitors lock their graphical user interfaces behind expensive enterprise paywalls, forcing free users to rely entirely on the command line. Tyk allows engineering teams to visualize their API traffic, manage authentication tokens, and set rate limits using a clean web interface without paying a licensing fee.
It also strongly emphasizes GraphQL support. As GraphQL has risen in popularity as an alternative to REST APIs, Tyk built a "Universal Data Graph" feature. This allows an organization to stitch together multiple legacy REST APIs and expose them to frontend developers as a single, unified GraphQL endpoint, dramatically reducing the complexity of building modern web applications.
