The industry standard for 3D sculpting.

About ZBrush

ZBrush is fundamentally different from almost every other 3D software on the market; it is entirely focused on high-resolution digital sculpting. Before ZBrush, creating highly detailed, organic 3D models (like monsters, hyper-realistic human faces, or ornate jewelry) using traditional polygonal modeling was incredibly tedious and mathematically rigid. ZBrush revolutionized the industry by introducing "Pixol" technology, allowing artists to interact with digital models as if they were sculpting with real, physical clay, manipulating millions of polygons simultaneously with fluid, artistic brush strokes. The software is designed to handle an astonishing amount of geometry. While traditional software might struggle with a model containing a few million polygons, ZBrush can easily process and manipulate models containing tens or even hundreds of millions of polygons in real-time. This allows artists to sculpt microscopic details—such as individual pores on skin, the texture of woven fabric, or tiny scratches on armor—with absolute precision. Artists use pressure-sensitive drawing tablets to carve, smooth, pinch, and pull the digital clay, creating highly expressive, organic forms that are practically impossible to achieve through standard drafting methods. Because ZBrush models are often too complex (poly-heavy) to be used directly in video games or animated films, it serves a highly specialized role within the broader production pipeline. Artists use ZBrush to create the ultra-detailed "high-poly" master sculpt. They then use retopology tools (often within ZBrush or a secondary program) to create a simplified, low-poly version of the model. Finally, the microscopic details from the ZBrush sculpt are "baked" into texture maps (like normal or displacement maps) that are applied to the low-poly model, creating the illusion of massive detail in a game engine or rendering software. ZBrush is considered absolutely essential software for any professional character artist or digital sculptor.
